A bill creating the original state park, Yellowstone was signed into lay by President Ulysses S. Grant 1872 . National parks are designated for their natural beauty, unique geological features, diverse ecosystems and recreational opportunities. Thirty states have national parks, as do the territories of American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands. California has the most with 9, followed by Alaska with 8, Utah with 5 and Colorado with 4.
